Gun Control Group Starts First Louisiana Chapter at LSU
A gun control group has opened up an operation on the LSU campus. This group is called Students Demand Action. They are pushing for stricter gun laws. This is the first chapter of this group in Louisiana.
Senior Elizabeth Laurent is the president of the Louisiana Chapter and she tells the LSU student newspaper, The Daily Reveille "this is a nonprofit volunteer organization basically advocating for gun safety and against gun violence. Better gun legislation, all of that."
What Will This Group Do in Louisiana?
Laurent says members will be working to get lawmakers in Louisiana to enact stricter gun laws.
Students Demand Action began in 2016 but expanded in 2018 shortly after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It is now a nationwide initiative. There are 500 chapters around the country.
Laurent stepped up the effort to bring this group to LSU after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The LSU chapter will be holding fund raising efforts to draw attention to the gun debate.
They will be working to get bills proposed during the spring session of the legislature.
Is This Group About Banning Guns?
That is not what they are talking about. Students Deserve Action is not proposing any kind of gun ban. But they do want to see stricter regulations to try to keep criminals from getting guns.
