Federal Judge Halts Louisiana’s Ten Commandments Law
An order was issued this morning by Federal Judge John deGravelles granting a preliminary injunction against Louisiana's Ten Commandments for schools law. The injunction was requested by the plaintiffs and prevents the state from moving forward with plans to place the displays in schools around the state.
The plaintiffs are led by parents of Jewish, Christian, and Unitarian Universalist students. These parents filed the lawsuit quickly after the legislature moved forward with their plans. The parents are backed by multiple Free Speech and religious organizations. This includes the ACLU, Americans United for the Separation of church and State, and the Freedom from Religious Foundation.
Originally, the law was going to force schools to have the commandments posted by January 1st, 2025. But this injunction will eliminate that deadline.
However, this is not a final ruling. This is only a pause in the implementation of the law until it can be thoroughly argued in the courts.
