Caddo Parish Commissioner John Atkins talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about the findings of the recent United Way ALICE report, and what are the possible solutions to poverty in the area.

"The ALICE report - Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed - so, it's the first economic tier up from poverty," says Atkins, "The people who may be one or two paychecks from being in poverty. The United Way measures that and tracks those levels."

Atkins also explains and expounds on what he sees as obvious solutions: Education, employment, marriage and reducing out-of-wedlock births. The Commissioner also makes the point that the burden of poverty on social services and entitlement programs is putting an unsustainable economic burden on American taxpayers.
