As more and more residents of Northwest Louisiana have decided to leave the confines of city life and move to nearby rural areas, some are considering adding a pond to their landscaping.

Of course, several questions occur to would-be farm pond owners. Along with considering the possible location for the pond, there are questions about the actual management of the pond and very few places to go for those answers.

That research could all be done in one place this Saturday in Haughton!

Thanks to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Office and a number of other partners, a free farm pond construction and management workshop will be held this Friday, April 21, at Red Oak Lake, 1495 Potter Road, near Haughton.

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Engineer Jacob Paul and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist Jeff Sibley will discuss pond planning and construction, water quality, weed control, nutrient issues, pond stocking, and information on USDA NRCS technical and financial assistance.

Workshop sessions will begin at 8:30 am, at Red Oak Lake and conclude at 2:00 pm. On-site registration will begin at 8:00 am. There is no charge to attend this workshop, but because food will be served, pre-registration is requested.

To pre-register or for more information on the workshop, call or text (318) 237-8350 and provide contact information and the name of the workshop at least three days prior to the event.

This workshop is provided free to the public by the partnership and support of Drax, Mudd & Holland Consulting Engineers, Burnham Construction, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Trailblazer RC&D.
