Texas Buc-ee’s Closure Won’t Slow Louisiana Openings
If you saw the headlines about a Buc-ee’s closing in Texas and wondered whether Louisiana’s long-awaited locations were in trouble too, the better answer right now is no.
The Port Lavaca store that is being rebranded is one of the company’s older, smaller formats, not one of the giant travel centers people now associate with the Buc-ee’s name.
For Louisiana drivers watching Ruston and Lafayette, the latest reporting still points to both projects moving ahead.
One Buc-ee's Closure Does Not Mean Expansion Is Stalling
The store in Port Lavaca is not the kind of Buc-ee’s most people picture when they think of wall-to-wall snacks, giant souvenir sections, and rows of gas pumps. It dates back to 2000 and never grew into one of the company’s mega travel centers. Reports say that site is set to become a 7-Eleven, which makes for a surprising headline, but it does not look like a sign that Buc-ee’s is pulling back from its larger growth plans.

That matters in Louisiana, because there has been real anticipation around the state finally getting its own Buc-ee’s locations. After years of rumors, delays, and waiting, people in both North Louisiana and Acadiana have been watching every update closely. A single older Texas location changing hands is newsworthy, but it is not the same thing as a company freezing new development.
Ruston Still Looks Like The First Louisiana Stop
Ruston remains the clearest sign that Louisiana is still on Buc-ee’s map. Buc-ee’s officially announced the groundbreaking for its Ruston travel center in October 2025. The project at I-20 and Tarbutton Road is expected to span about 74,000 square feet with 120 fueling positions. The company also said the store would bring more than 200 full-time jobs to the area.
That announcement gave North Louisiana something more solid than speculation. Buc-ee’s Director of Real Estate and Development Stan Beard called Ruston “a smart-growth town with a big attitude,” which sounded a lot like a company planting a flag, not backing away.
Lafayette Is Still A Major Part Of The Plan
South Louisiana is still in the picture too. Reporting earlier this year said the Lafayette Buc-ee’s is now targeting July 2027, which is actually earlier than some prior estimates. The planned location near Louisiana Avenue and I-10 is expected to include a 74,000-square-foot store, about 120 gas pumps, and nearly 700 parking spaces, with site work already underway.

So yes, one Buc-ee’s is closing in Texas. But for Louisiana, the bigger story is that Ruston and Lafayette still appear to be moving forward. For fans of Beaver Nuggets, brisket sandwiches, and spotless road-trip bathrooms, the wait is not over, but it still seems to be headed somewhere.
