Some of the demographic information on Coronavirus is disturbing. About 70% of the people who have died from Coronavirus are African Americans.

Experts believe this is a result of economic disparity and access to health care. Pre-existing conditions are also very prevalent. In Louisiana, two-thirds of those who died from the virus also had hypertension. Nearly half of the victims had diabetes and one in four was either obese or suffered from chronic kidney disease.

“Obviously this is a big disparity,” Edwards said at Monday’s press briefing, about the data.

Louisiana’s population is 32% African American and in Orleans Parish 60% of the deaths are African Americans. 512 people have died in Louisiana from this virus.

Louisiana has the highest rate of deaths from COVID-19 in the nation.
