Are you a mosquito magnet?  I don't know why, but if my wife and I are sitting on the porch in the evening, it seems like I will get swarmed while she barely gets bothered. Actually, there is a little more science involved in why some people are more bothered by mosquitoes than others.

Why Mosquitoes Like Some People More Than Others

According to a story on VeryWellHealth, there are several reasons some people are more affected by mosquitoes than others.

Depending on where you look, there are various reasons you might be more of a mosquito magnet than others. But here are some of the most common reasons.

Blood Type

Type O is one preferred by the Asian Tiger mosquito.  But also, some people produce a secretion that signals their blood type.  This secretion tends to attract more mosquitoes regardless of blood type.

Carbon Dioxide

Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, which we produce when we exhale.  Naturally larger people breathe more heavily than smaller people, so would understandably attract more mosquitoes.

Sweat

Mosquitoes like sweat.  They are attracted to the lactic acid, ammonia, and other compounds in sweat, so naturally, the more time you spend outside in the heat and humidity, the more apt you are to be bitten.

Body Heat

This pairs nicely with sweating, but female mosquitoes are attracted to heat, and will gravitate to humans even when another heat source might be present.

Certain Types of Skin Bacteria

This might sound disgusting, but mosquitoes are attracted to certain types and amount of bacteria on the skin.  Which also might explain why you might have more mosquitoes around your feet and ankles.

There's an App for That!

So how can you prevent mosquito bites?  A few things you can do include stay inside, don't exhale, and don't have any blood.  But if you actually want to live your life, and you love the outdoors, there's an app that can help you track mosquito activity in your area.

Weather Channel app on the Apple App store or Google Play has a feature called "The Mosquito Forecast, which actually predicts mosquito activity by zip code using weather data and local information.

Simply download the Weather Channel app for iPhone or Android, there are links above, add your zip code, tap "Daily" at the bottom and scroll down.  You're welcome!
