As the clock is ticking on a possible end of SNAP benefits during the government shutdown, food banks are hoping the public will step in to help. Demand for help is up by more than 15% this week and that number is expected to climb.

Louisiana Steps in to Help Fund SNAP Benefits

Governor Jeff Landry has issued an Executive Order declaring a state of emergency to help keep funds flowing. Landry says "we should not allow our elderly, disabled, or children to go hungry."

This executive order calls on lawmakers to pull money from the Revenue Stabilization Fund to keep the money flowing. Louisiana gets about $150 million a month from the feds for the SNAP program. It will take a two-thirds vote in each chamber to spend this month.

Money to fund SNAP across the state will run out at the end of this month. Governor Jeff Landry says that means recipients will not be getting help for November unless something changes quickly.

Local food banks and food pantries are bracing for calls for service.
