Shreveport is one step closer to building a new police headquarters building at 1234 Texas Avenue. The money for this project was approved in the 2021 bond issue.

The bids have been opened and the city is prepared to award the bid to Hand Construction Company of Shreveport. The bid was $22,152,000, which is about 10% less than the architect’s estimate. There were 3 other bidders for this job.

What Work Will Be Done on New Shreveport Police Station

The existing building will be completely gutted and the new structure will be built at the site. This complex is expected to be three stories and be about 60,000 square feet.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux says:

I am so excited that this day has finally arrived. This is a huge step in getting our Police Department into modern office space while still preserving some of the historic features of the 1950s era structure that once served as Shreveport’s City Hall.

The Mayor expects the work to begin in early 2026 and could be wrapped up before the end of 2027.

The bid package calls on the contractor to:

1. Meet at least once a month with the City’s Project Manager and various City representatives.
2. The contractor shall submit the construction schedule for the work, including date of commencement and the date of substantial completion.

The contract calls for construction time of “800 consecutive days.” This means 800 straight days. So, you have to remove weekends and holidays. You also have to allow some weather-related non-working days.

What Does the Description of the Work Include

The bid documents say this “project consists of demolition of an existing building along with most of the existing pavement areas adjacent to the existing structures, renovations for one of the existing structures, and constructing a new three (3) story structure in the area of the demolished building and new parking and drive areas.”
