See Graduation Rates for Shreveport Bossier Schools
SHREVEPORT, LA – A top priority for Louisiana education leaders is to improve the high school experience and get the students ready for the next phase of life.
Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley tells us we must do a better job of getting our students prepared for all of the options available to them. He says not all students will go on to college. He says they need to be able to succeed in technical schools, or straight into the work force.
One of the problems these young people face is failing to graduate high school. The latest numbers from the Louisiana Department of Education shows our statewide graduation rate is 82.7%.
The numbers show just over 6% of students don’t finish the 9th grade. These students are more likely to face major challenges in life.
Louisiana is at the bottom of the list of states for high school graduation rates. This is data from the World Population Review. This is not the latest data for the nation.
Here are the worst performing states:
California 83.9%
Texas 84.4%
Mississippi 85.3
Louisiana 85.9%
New Mexico 86.5%
Here are the best performing states
Montana 94%
Wyoming 93.6%
Vermont 93.5%
Minnesota 93.4%
New Hampshire 93.3%
The report says there are several reasons why a student fails to graduate:
- a less-than-ideal home life
- working to help support the family
- homelessness
Educators and counselors are encouraged to try to identify those students who are not college bound and find alternatives for them and to help them look at all possible options available as they close in on graduation day.
