Teachers in Louisiana are not keeping up with other southern states for teacher pay. They have gotten several one time stipend checks, but that’s not a permanent pay raise. Many state lawmakers will say teacher pay is something that should be handled at the local level and not with state legislation.

But this is again expected to be a hot topic during the legislative session next year. The latest numbers on teacher pay in Louisiana show the average teacher salary in Louisiana is $56,370, more than $16,000 below the national average which is $72,030 according to the National Education Association.

The latest data puts Louisiana at #47 in the nation according to the NEA.

But some parishes are doing better than others. In fact, teachers in north Louisiana are among the highest paid across the state. There's really good news for teachers around Shreveport and Bossier. The salaries for most parishes in northwest Louisiana have been climbing and this region has several parishes in the top ten list this year.
