On Wednesday, Louisiana Republicans voted down legislation that would have added exceptions to the state's abortion ban for cases of rape and incest. Making Louisiana's abortion ban now one of the strictest in the United States. That ban is the responsibility of a Democrat Governor, as John Bel Edwards signed the ban into law.

The state legislature was set to examine some retooling of that near-complete abortion ban. Some adjustments to the "vague language" used in the initial law, reexamining punishments included, and of course this rape & incest exemption. However all of these measures won't even get a chance to see the full chamber, let alone the full Louisiana House. These were all killed inside a small Republican controlled committee.

The man responsible for signing the bill in the first place now seems to have a problem with his law. Governor John Bel Edwards told the Associated Press:

“I simply do not understand how we as a state can tell any victim that she must be forced by law to carry her rapist’s baby to term, regardless of the impact on her own physical or mental health, the wishes of her parents, or the medical judgment of her physician...As I have said before, rape and incest exceptions protect crime victims. We must do all that we can to protect them and sadly, the committee failed to do so today.”

The Louisiana House Criminal Justice Committee heard testimony from victims before voting on party lines 10-5 to shut down these bills.
