Louisiana Ranks Seventh in New Pickpocketing Study

This sounds like a scene right out of the musical "Oliver". Louisiana ranks seventh among the states with the highest reported rates of pickpocketing, according to a new analysis of FBI crime data.

This study comes just a day after a friend posted a message on social media about losing some of her precious videos when her phone was snatched right out of her back pocket. It's still a problem and often is a crime of opportunity.

This study by Coinfully, found Louisiana averaged 9.2 reported pickpocketing offenses per 100,000 residents annually between 2022 and 2024. Nevada topped the list with 22.9 reports per 100,000 residents, followed by Hawaii (18.5), Missouri (15.3), Illinois (12.8), Georgia (11.3) and Tennessee (10.0).

Study examined FBI crime reports

Researchers analyzed data from the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), which tracks crimes reported by participating law enforcement agencies nationwide. Pickpocketing offenses reported from 2022 through 2024 were compared with U.S. Census population estimates to calculate annual rates per 100,000 residents.

The study shows pickpocketing is more about opportunity. A criminal spots your wallet peaking out of your pocket and jumps into action. Experts say you should always keep valuables in your front pockets or in a secure bag or purse that you have a firm grasp of.

Nevada and Hawaii are near the top of the list because visitors are often distracted in places like casinos or on crowded beaches. But the numbers are also high in the South and Midwest. Victims in these areas are often targeted at busy festivals, sporting events and entertainment districts.

Ways to Prevent Being a Victim

You are also being urged to avoid leaving bags unattended or hanging on the backs of chairs, and be sure to stay alert after being bumped in crowded areas.

If you are on vacation, you are cautioned to leave expensive jewelry and luxury watches at home or secured in a hotel safe. You should also carry cash and payment cards separately to reduce losses if a wallet is stolen.
