A new analysis of 129,825 fatal crashes across the U.S. from iSelect, found the deadliest wrecks happen most often on state highways, not interstates. In Louisiana, the study by iSelect lists 3,936 fatal crashes over five years, with state highways accounting for 51% of the state’s fatal crashes.

What the New Analysis Found About Louisiana Roads

Nationwide, the report says state highways account for 42% of fatal crashes, compared with U.S. highways (23%), interstates (18%), and local streets (17%). The reasoning is pretty straightforward: state routes often mix higher speeds with intersections, driveways, and traffic that is not always separated by medians or barriers.

Louisiana’s Crash Hot Spots

The study’s Louisiana road list is led by major corridors drivers know well:

  • I-10 (236)
  • US-90 (141)
  • US-61 (127)
  • I-12 (97)
  • I-20 (84)
  • LA-1 / SR-1 (84)
  • US-190 (84)
  • I-49 (60)
  • US-167 (56)
  • US-71 (53)

Those routes cut through daily life, from South Louisiana commutes and coastal traffic on US-90 to long-haul stretches of I-10 and I-20, plus north-south connectors like US-61 and I-49.

Where Fatal Crashes Happen in Louisiana

The breakdown in the release shows Louisiana’s fatal crashes landing here:

  • State highways: 51%
  • U.S. highways: 22%
  • Interstates: 17%
  • Local streets: 11%

That split matters because it pushes attention beyond the interstates. It also lines up with what safety researchers regularly emphasize: fatal crash data is tracked in the federal FARS system, which is often used for this kind of state-by-state and roadway analysis.

Practical Takeaways for Louisiana Drivers

Speed, following distance, and distraction are the quiet troublemakers on two-lane and multi-access highways. Staying patient at intersections, watching for sudden stops near turn lanes, and giving trucks extra room are simple habits that can keep a routine drive from turning tragic.
