LOCKPORT, La. (AP) — A Thibodaux animal rescue group helped seize cats from an alleged animal hoarder over the weekend.

Authorities say 34 cats were being kept in cages, with multiple cats to a cage, under a carport at an empty home in Lockport.

Lafourche deputies say most of the animals appeared to be in need of medical attention at the time of their seizure.

Dr. Lionel de la Houssaye, a veterinarian who helped treat the cats, told The Courier 15 had to be put down due to severe health problems or because they were too feral to be adopted.

Deputies say the cats' owner, 71-year-old Sheila Adams, was issued a criminal summons for 34 counts of simple cruelty to animals, and she was booked with violating the parish ordinance requiring the vaccinations.
