Jane Smith On ‘The State of TOPS’, Can It Be Saved? [VIDEO]
Former state legislator and BESE member Jane Smith talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about the state of TOPS, its increasing costs and whether, under its current implementation, is financially sustainable.
The longtime educator tells KEEL listeners that under its current structure, the price of TOPS will continue to increase, become an even greater budgetary burden. Smith also points out that that TOPS, similar to students loans, is responsible for driving up tuition costs at state universities. She adds that it is time for not only state legislators, but voters across Louisiana, to make some "tough choice" about the scholarship program and its future.
