This Texas Supermarket Once Held a Truly Disgusting Secret

Texas has many stories but this one ranks amongst the "disgusting" spectrum of stories that have been told. Those who lived in Fort Worth will remember the Mexia Supermarket. But those who remembered will also remember that the store has declared a health hazard in 1999; the reason why, is pretty disgusting.

What happened at the Mexia Supermarket in 1999?

While finding all the news reports & articles is scattered all over the internet, people were able to gather all the information on the Mexia Supermarket lost media page. In a brief summary, the Mexia Supermarket in Fort Worth, Texas was forced to close its doors in the summer of 1999 after the owners declared bankruptcy.

Instead of throwing out or donating the food they couldn't sell, the owners just simply...LEFT everything inside to sit and rot inside the hollowed remains of the store...

Everything was left alone until 3 months later when locals complained about the smell coming from the building. Health crews had to come out to the store to investigate the smell. What they found was absolutely disgusting.

A film crew went inside the supermarket with the sanitization agents to document their findings. They managed to capture footage of deli meat that had turned black, rotten turkeys & meat products, fruit & vegetables rotting, milk jugs that have exploded, canned food that were leaking... and that's just from the footage that we're able to SEE.

Footage of the inside of Mexia Supermarket first surfaced on the 2010 documentary, Life After People. The episode that showed the Mexia Supermarket was titled "The Last Supper", which does exist online on YouTube.

Only a small amount of footage is available online however. The story has also been covered by various YouTubers like blameitonjorge & Gubby, who have also included footage of the inside of the supermarket.

Is the Mexia Supermarket still around in Texas?

The obvious answer is a big fat NO. The store was cleaned out & disinfected by some extremely brave souls; much braver than I would've been. But the building IS still in Fort Worth at 3900 Hemphill St. It is now a Dollar General.

What's interesting is that the story on Mexia Supermarket is considered "partially lost media". There WAS more footage recorded & captured by the film crew that went in with the sanitization crew to capture just how disgusting the inside of the building was. But only bits of it were used in the Life After People documentary & so far that's about as much footage as we're most likely going to get.
