Who Will Be Opening Day Starter For New Texas Rangers Manager Skip Schumaker?
The Texas Rangers are preparing for the 2026 MLB season with a high-stakes matchup to kick off the year. The club is scheduled to begin the regular season on Thursday, March 26, 2026, against the Philadelphia Phillies on the road.
This road contest is actually a big deal for the Rangers, as they look to establish their identity under new manager Skip Schumaker. But there are a bunch of other changes in the clubhouse that also need to solidify.
One big part of the team is the starting rotation scenario. The team is currently evaluating the rotation to determine which arm provides the best opportunity to secure a win in the hostile road environment...at least for the first nine innings.
Nathan Eovaldi Leads Rotation Projections
Veteran right-hander Nathan Eovaldi remains the primary candidate to take the mound for the season opener. His clutch pedigree, and consistent performance during the previous seasons, make him the logical choice for the coaching staff. But there are other names in the rotation that could justify that spot.
Eovaldi has shown durability throughout the early stages of camp, and continues to hit his velocity targets during bullpen sessions. Barring any late spring training setbacks, the Rangers are expected to rely on his experience to lead the staff out of the dugout.
But that dugout will also host names like Jacob deGrom and MacKenzie Gore. Both pitchers could justify an opening day spot based on their careers. While deGrom might be on the backside of his career, Gore is on his way up.
However, Eovaldi is right in his prime, and will probably be the guy.
Spring Training Performance Impacting Roster
While the top of the rotation appears settled, the final spots in the starting five are still being contested by several younger arms. The performance of the bullpen and back-end starters during Grapefruit League games will dictate how the Rangers structure their roster for the opening series.
The front office is monitoring health and efficiency closely to ensure the 26-man roster is optimized for the early season schedule. Every inning thrown in March is being treated as a live evaluation of how the pitching staff will hold up against National League hitting...especially with the designated hitter in play.
