A local judge has ruled that a lawsuit against the City of Shreveport over water bills can be certified as a class action suit.

So the next question is: How do you sign up as a plaintiff in this lawsuit?

Attorney Jerry Harper represents the plaintiffs in the case and he tells KEEL News it's not a matter of signing up to be a plaintiff in the suit. He says anyone who has been a customer of the Shreveport Water Department since 2007 will be listed in the suit. You will have to opt out if you do not want to be a party to the suit.

Harper is now in the process of sending out notifications to anyone who was a customer since that date.

The lawsuit claims the city has been over billing customers for years. This class action suit could involve more than 66,000 accounts. The number of affected residents is close to 200,000. If the city loses the suit, it could cost anywhere between $10 and $20 million dollars.
