Speed Bumps Have Been Installed in South Shreveport to Slow Drivers
Speeding in neighborhoods is one of the complaints local officials often get calls about. One of the areas where this is a big problem is Dixie Garden in southeast Shreveport. That stretch from East 70th is actually not in the city limits. It is patrolled by the Caddo Sheriff and is under the control of the Caddo Parish Commission.
How Long Has Speeding Been a Problem?
Caddo Commissioner John Paul Young has been dealing with complaints about speeding in that area for several years. In 2024, the Commission voted to drop the speed limit to 30mph from 35. Speed monitoring signs have been installed and many residents have “slow down” signs in their yards. But people still fly through the residential area.
Parish traffic studies have shown that speeding has been a problem on Dixie Garden making it unsafe for the residents. The parish ordinance calls for “traffic calming devices” on Dixie Garden Drive, beginning at Highway 511 (East 70th) and extending north to the City of Shreveport limits.

Speed Bumps Have Now Been Installed
Back in the summer, Young won the approval from his colleagues to install speed bumps on Dixie Garden. Those speed bumps are now in place. Several have been placed across the roadway to slow down drivers. But they have also generated complaints.

Speed Bumps Instead of Cameras
In 2024, parish commissioners talked about a plan to install speed cameras on roadways in the parish as a way to slow down traffic. But that plan was scrapped when state lawmakers passed a measure banning the speed cameras except in school zones. Dixie Garden was one of the roads that would have been a top priority for the speed cameras.
