Warning About Crabmeat from Louisiana Neighboring States

SHREVEPORT, LA - A warning has been issued about crabmeat sold in a couple of southern states. The FDA has issued a recall for packages of lump crabmeat from an Alabama company.

What Crabmeat Is Being Recalled?

1lb packages of crabmeat from Irvington Seafood is being recalled. This includes packages of Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat. These products were distributed to locations in Alabama and Mississippi.

Why Is the Crabmeat Being Recalled?

The FDA announcement says the products are being recalled because of possible foodborne illness - Listeria monocytogenes

They have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

These products could end up in retail seafood markets or restaurants.

What to Look for

The product comes in a 1 lb. tubs, package marked with license number AL 111-C with the company name " Irvington Seafood."

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

This crabmeat was processed on May 12, 2024 and tested positive for L. monocytogenes. The production of the product has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.
