Some big events are going on at Bossier Parish schools in October, including Fire Prevention Week and National Walk to School Day.

Monday, October 3

"Don't Wait. Check the Date!"
Kerr Elementary School Gym
8:30 a.m.

Bossier City Mayor Lo Walker will kick off the Bossier City Fire Department's annual fire safety program at Kerr Elementary School, where he will present a proclamation recognizing Oct. 9-15 as National Fire Prevention Week in Bossier City. The Bossier City Fire Department takes its fire safety message to all Bossier elementary schools and engages students with a multimedia presentation and puppet show. Of course, Freddie the Fire Truck is always the kids' favorite and he will once again be making an appearance. This year's theme is entitled "Don't Wait. Check the Date!" emphasizing the importance of smoke alarms and the need to replace them every 10 years.
Tuesday, October 4

Exploring Our Quality of Life

8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Approximately 40 Bossier Parish juniors that are members of Bossier Youth Leadership will explore what quality of life means and what Bossier/Shreveport has to offer. Their first adventure will be a scavenger hunt and tour at Red River Wildlife Refuge, followed by a stop at the Strand Theatre, lunch at the Red River Revel, and a visit to Bossier Arts Council. Here is the schedule:

Wednesday, October 5

National Walk to School Day
Apollo Elementary
7:30 a.m.

They are celebrating foot and pedal power at Apollo Elementary. Wednesday is National Walk to School Day and the Rockets are being encouraged to meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Airline Viking Baseball Field and walk or bike to school as one big group. Coach Michael Puyear is once again organizing this year's event, which draws large numbers of students and their parents.
Thursday, October 6

Airline High School Homecoming Parade

Pep rally at 1:45 p.m.
Parade at 6 p.m.

Viking Pride will be on full display at Airline's annual Homecoming pep rally and parade. Students will get all fired up at a pep rally taking place at 1:45 p.m. in the Boys' Gym. Then at 6 p.m. the parade begins, with Homecoming Court, football players and spirit groups marching and riding around the school to celebrate the annual fall event.

Join Bossier High School as the Bearkats revive the Homecoming Parade tradition as they celebrate 100 years of making it happen! The Grand Marshal for the parade is Sandra "Samm" Darby, President of the Bossier Parish School Board, and a Bearkat alumnus. After the parade, there will be a pep rally in the stadium with games, performances by the Bossier High Cheerleaders, BHS Prideline and Band. An added twist is all former cheer, band and danceline members have been invited to perform with their BHS family once again. It should be a lot of fun!

The parade route is as follows: Leaving from the Heart 'O Bossier Shopping Center, the parade will turn right onto Barksdale Boulevard, then turn right onto Hamilton Road, left onto Coleman Avenue and a final right onto Bearkat Avenue, ending behind the Bossier Council On Aging in the student parking lot.

The Bossier Parish School Board will meet in regular session at 6 p.m. at Bossier Instructional Center. During the meeting, two award-winning STARBASE educators will be recognized, as well as Benton High School for its Golf Team State Championship and Bossier Schools' first Gold Star employee of 2016-17. We will also be thanking area businesses, churches and organizations that so generously donated school supplies, backpacks and uniforms to the district to help our students in need.
Friday, October 7

Benton Tiger Golf Signing

Noon

Benton Tiger Golfer Colton Ryan will be signing at noon with Central Baptist College, located in Conway, Arkansas. Central Baptist Head Golf Coach, Lyle Middleton, will be on hand to present Colton with a scholarship.

Bossier High Homecoming Game
Bossier High School Stadium
7 p.m.

Come support the Bearkats as they take on the Northwood Falcons. Pre-game activities begin at 6:40 p.m. with the recognition of former players from all decades. The Homecoming Court will be presented at half-time and this year's queen will be crowned. Also during half-time, the traditional burning of the KATS will take place. Gates open at 5:45 p.m.
