When you hear details about the project, it sounds exciting. But the big sticking point for the plan to build a YMCA in north Bossier is the funding. The plan being considered by the Bossier City Council calls for the city to pay for construction of the 65,000 square foot complex but the YMCA would staff, equip, and run the operation. The YMCA would also pay for all maintenance of the building.

YMCA CEO Gary Lash will go before the council on Tuesday to discuss the plan and answer questions from the council. The price tag for this complex would be $30 million dollars. If approved, it would be built in the north Bossier Park.

A poll at Bossier Now shows 62% support the plan to build the Y while 38% are against the proposal.

If approved by the Council, Bossier City would build and own the facility and the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana would completely outfit the building with fitness equipment and supplies and would also hire and pay all staff to operate the facility.

Bossier Parks and Recreation will have full access to use the complex for all of its youth sports programs including basketball and volleyball. The Bossier School Superintendent has expressed support for the complex. The YMCA has plans to replicate a basic swim program in place at the Shreveport YMCA for Caddo 2nd graders and make this program a part of the Bossier school curriculum.

What Is the Economic Impact of the YMCA on Bossier?

This project is estimated to bring in $6-$7 million in economic development to Bossier City. How is that possible? Lash says the YMCA will be able to host several basketball tournaments and swim meets which will attract players from all over the region. He says these are typically 3 day events and means the participants and their families will be staying in local hotels and spending money in our community.
