Tomorrow is Super Safety Saturday in Shreveport. The event combines family fun with educational activities to teach children about a variety of topics, from bicycle and sports/water safety to health care. It's sponsored by the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.

The organization's Lecie Israel tells KEEL News that in addition to all the health and safety information, there's a great variety of other things to see and do there.

"We also have the Touch-a-Truck section of the event, which is always really popular with the kids, especially the little boys," Israel says. "Kids are allowed to, oftentimes, touch and climb up on these really cool vehicles, like fire trucks, racecars, big Mac trucks, which -- let me tell you -- are really cool."

And there's the Family Fun Zone, with bounce houses, games, prizes -- all free to anyone who comes out. Sheriff's Safety Town also has a special area where kids can bring their bikes out and ride through a simulated "town" to learn about rules of the road, and the Fire and Weather House to teach kids about how to keep themselves safe if their house catches fire.

Israel says the Junior League is really fortunate to be partnering with Safety Town. "For our 75th-year anniversary, which we're in our 80th year now, donated a pavilion to Sheriff's Safety Town," she says. "That's where, I'm told, the kids eat lunch when they come on their field trips. So we're proud that we can help support their mission, too."

One more cool feature is the Pitstop to Safety Pass. For the first 500 children who come out Saturday, they get a necklace with a card on the end, with several designated areas for the kids to visit.

"There are five sort of checkpoints that correspond to the different sections of Super Safety Saturday. There's a checkpoint for the Health and Safety Fair, and there's a checkpoint at Touch-a-Truck," Israel says. "And if the children get all of their little items checked off, on their way out they get a goody bag, which is filled with all sorts of fun things."

Everything's going on from 9 a.m. until noon tomorrow, September 21st. If you need more info, visit the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier's website.
