Two Local Grads Earn Junior League Scholarships

Congratulations go out today to two recent local high school graduates.

Catherine Clayton and Madeline Mays have both earned 2014-15 scholarships from the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. The organization says they were chosen for their academic achievements and service to their communities.

Clayton graduated from Airline High School this year with a 3.85 GPA. She'll be attenting Texas A&M University this fall, and plans to major in political science, then possibly go on to law school. She served as a Girls State Delegate, Sophomore Class President, Student Body Secretary, Senior Class President, National Honor Society Vice President and History Bowl Team Subject Captain.

She's also been a member of both the swim and track and field teams. She's spent more than 500 hours over the past six years serving the local community in a variety of capacities, including being a juror and prosecuting lawyer for the Teen Court program, helping teach Vacation Bible School, and serving as a DARE Role Model.

Mays graduated from Loyola College Prep with a 4.4 GPA. She's heading to the University of Arkansas Honors College this fall. She played competitive club soccer, Loyola Varsity Soccer and Loyola Tennis, and participated in a long list of extracurricular activities, such as Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, Key Club and Junior Class Vice President.

She's been very involved with Flyers Aiding the Hungry and service as an officer of the organization, which provides families with food and children with gifts during the holiday season. She's also done a lot of volunteer work as a soccer coach, with Volunteers of America, and at the Revel. One thing that garnered her particular attention was her work to help create and organize a fundraiser, on a week's notice, that generated funds needed to send 125 first-graders from J.S. Clark Elementary on a field trip to the Dixie Corn Maze.

The Junior League wishes both young ladies well in their future endeavors.
