Robotics Competition Coming To The Area

The second competition of the Regional Autonomous Robotics Circuit is scheduled for Saturday, November 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Bossier Civic Center.  Seventy-six teams from area elementary, middle, and high schools will compete in a “fire-fighting” simulation that requires teams to use their robots to autonomously navigate a home and to locate and fight fires using light sensors and ultrasonic sensors.

The Regional Autonomous Robotics Circuit is a series of four robotics competitions offered by the Cyber Innovation Center in partnership with Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana Tech University, Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center, and Bossier Parish Schools. Students in grades 4-12 from schools across the region may participate in one or all of the competitions that are scheduled throughout the 2011-2012 school year.

Like the first competition, teams will earn points based on their performance at the competition and will be ranked accordingly. The highest ranking teams in the elementary, middle, and high school divisions will be awarded team trophies at the awards ceremony, which is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. At the conclusion of the final competition in May 2012, grand champions in each division will be named based on the accumulation of points from all four competitions, and those teams will be awarded trophies and technology awards for their schools.

“The Cyber Innovation Center is thrilled that the number of students participating in the Regional Autonomous Robotics Circuit competitions is growing. We had approximately 64 teams registered for the first competition in September and now have a dozen more teams registered for the second competition. The Cyber Innovation Center and its partners are pleased to provide opportunities for students to develop their STEM skills,” stated G.B. Cazes, Director of the Cyber Innovation Center’s Academic and Workforce Development Program.
