Louisiana House Bill 587, better known as The Pastor Protection Act, has passed its first test on the way to becoming law. The bill, introduced by Bossier City Representative Mike Johnson, sailed through the House Civil Law Committee by a vote of 7 to 3. The legislation, which Johnson says is designed to ensure that a religious leader cannot be forced by the government to conduct a wedding ceremony that violates his or her sincerely held religious belief, is expected to receive strong bipartisan support as it makes it way through the process.
