Marijuana possession penalties in Louisiana have been reduced after Governor Bobby Jindal signs legislation passed by lawmakers.

The bill by New Orleans representative Austin Badon drops the maximum sentence from 20 years in prison down to eight. Badon says people arrested for simple possession need counseling, not jail time.
Under the new law a first offense with 14 grams of marijuana would carry up to 15 days in jail. A second conviction drops from a felony to a misdemeanor. Badon says what he likes about the measure is that it gives people a second chance for marijuana possession.
