NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Dueling protests over the future of Confederate monuments in New Orleans have taken to the city's Jackson Square.

White supremacist David Duke and a small group of supporters Saturday converged on the square.

As Duke, who is also running for Senate, called for the statues to stay put, he was heckled by bystanders.

After Duke left, a few hundred people marched through the city's French Quarter to the square, calling for the monuments to be removed.

The city council last year voted to remove the four monuments but that's been stalled in court. A major hearing on their removal is slated for Wednesday.

That sparked the group Take Em Down Nola, which wants the statues gone, to call a protest on Saturday. Duke then announced he'd also be demonstrating.
