SHREVEPORT, LA - Many folks are already finished with their Christmas shopping for this year, but lots of others are still procrastinating and will get the shopping done in the last few weeks. The survey by Wise Voter shows how much we plan to spend on gifts for the holidays.

The average American will spend just over $1,200 dollars on Christmas this year. That's the national average. We will find prices for many items higher this year because of inflation. But you can still find some deals.

What State's Residents Will Spend the Most?

Folks in Maryland are among the highest earners in the nation and they have the most disposable income. They will spend more than $2,700 on Christmas gifts while Utah is a close 2nd with spending expected at $2,300. Hawaii and Virginia are also near the top of the list and will spend about $2,100 this year.

New Jersey residents are expecting to spend about $2,000 this year.

How Much Will People in Louisiana and Texas Spend?

Louisiana is near the bottom of the list. Bayou State residents are planning to spend just over $530 dollars on Christmas gifts this year. That puts Louisiana at #47 on the list. Texas residents will spend an average of $1,360 dollars putting the Lone Star State at #18 biggest spenders for Christmas.

Much of the spending on gifts is for children. Half of all parents say they will spend as much as $200 per child on Christmas gifts. About 20% of parents plan to spend more than $200 on gifts for children.
