A 4-year-old's trip to the fair shouldn't spin into tragedy. It's especially frustrating when the technology designed to provide a safe thrill is short-circuited by human error.

A state Fire Marshal's report on the injury of a 4-year-old child at the State Fair of Louisiana concluded that operators of a kiddie ride didn't follow procedure.

A short-cut was taken in a two-step start-up process. A key was left in the power console and was turned to the on position while the worker was away from the control box. Another 4-year-old walked by and hit the start button causing another car to run over the child's classmate. He was trapped for over half an hour and is hospitalized in critical condition.
