What we all know as the Duck Pond on East Kings Highway is getting a major facelift this Saturday -- when a big ecological restoration project gets underway. Daniel Gehrig with Louisiana Environmental Solutions tells me invasive plant species -- like the Chinese Tallow trees -- will be removed, trash will be picked up and landscaping done. Oak trees will also be planted at the park. Once all that's finished, the pond will be refilled. As you might have noticed in the pictures I took and posted here several weeks ago, much of it dried up due to the lack of rainfall in our area. The restoration gets underway at 8:30 Saturday morning, and you're welcome to go out and help. If you do, be sure to wear your boots -- in case you end up near what little water is left -- and bring gardening gloves and tools. If this project is successful, it will be the first of many with the goal of restoring the health and vitality of the local environment.
