Several local students are in the running for top education honors. The State Department of Education has released the list of youngsters who are regional finalists. These young people are now up for Student of the Year awards.

The 21 students selected include one 5th, 8th and 12th grader from each of the state's seven regions and represent public and non-public elementary, middle and high schools across Louisiana.

State Superintendent John White says

The Department of Education applauds these 21 regional finalists for being recognized as some of the top students in Louisiana. This is a tremendous accomplishment, and we are proud of the hard work and leadership these students have contributed to their classrooms, schools, communities and state.
