The National Association of Letter Carriers conducts its 24th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Saturday, May 14.

Letter carriers will be collecting non-perishable food donations that day as they're delivering mail along their postal routes.

Be looking for a postcard or printed brown paper sack to show up in the mail that you can use for your donations. All you have to do is fill your bag with items like pasta or canned soup, fruits or vegetables next to your mailbox before your regular delivery time that day.

This food drive is held every year on the second Saturday in May. According to the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, it's become the nation's largest single-day food drive in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.

"Letter carriers are honored to be able to help people in need," said NALC President Fredric Rolando. "On a daily basis, we see the needs in the communities we serve, and we believe it's important to help meet those needs."

The local food bank will take your donations to its 120 partner non-profit and benevolent organizations, churches, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. The agency welcomes volunteers to help sort the donations once the food drive is over. Call 318-675-2400 to find out how to volunteer.
