Spelling Bee Winner Gets Victory On Third Try
It went on and on...but finally ended with a win for a Pennsylvania youngster. Five spellers stayed in the running way beyond the time allotted for the ESPN broadcast so you might not have seen the ending.
After 21 consecutive spellings without a stumble, 14-year-old eighth grader Sukanya Roy of South Abington Township, Pa., gets the trophy and the $40,000 in cash and prizes at the 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee. Sukanya has been there before. She tied for 12th in 2009 and 20th in 2010. Her winning word was "cymotrichous," which relates to wavy hair.
