Don't hold your breath if you are hoping for some snow in Shreveport for December. In about 2 weeks we will move into December and some folks might think about enjoying some snow for Christmas.

But if history is any indication, Shreveport Bossier will not likely see any snow in December. Over the past 6 years, we have gotten no snow at all during the month. But that is not the case over time. Typically our area does see some snow in the months of December, January and February.

Many of us will say we have had plenty of snow and ice in Shreveport during 2021 with the massive ice storm we had back in February when some parts of the area saw more than 10 inches of snow. I don't want to see anything like that again any time soon.

How Much Snow Does Shreveport Get Each Year?

Shreveport averages 1 inch of snow per year. The US average is 28 inches of snow every year. The Farmer's Almanac says winter for 2021 in Shreveport will be warmer than normal. But it does call for some cold days in early-mid December.

So if we do get colder days in December and this is one of the months when we do get snow, what could we expect? The National Weather Service reports we get an average of .1 snowfall days in December which puts our odds pretty low of seeing a white Christmas.

For an entire year, Shreveport gets snow for .8 days and averages up to 1.4 inches of snow. But we must note most of that snow never sticks on the ground because our temperatures are usually not cold enough to see any accumulation.

The stats also show we get measurable snowfall amounts once every other year. The heaviest snowstorm on record in Shreveport Bossier is 11 inches back in December of 1929. That record snow fell on December 21 and 22 and it did leave snow on the ground for Christmas Day.

When Did Shreveport See a Record Snowfall?

Some of our snowfall records might amaze you. Shreveport got 7.9 inches of snow on January 19, 1948 which is our single day record. That helped make 1948 a record year for snowfall in Shreveport Bossier. We got 14 inches of snow for that entire year.

How Cold Does It Get in Shreveport in December?

How cold are we in December? Our temps range from an average low of just over 38°F and an average high of 58°F. The average low-temperature is 41.9°F.

But we still could see some heat. Our record high for December is 84 which we set in 1955 and again in 2005. Our record low for December was 5 degrees which we set in 1989.
