Shreveport’s Sam Burns scored a 3-and-1 win over Santiago Gomez in the first round of the match play competition at the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship in Detroit.

Burns, an LSU sophomore, came from one down to take a two hole lead on the back nine. After a Gomez birdie cut the margin to one, Burns won both the 16th and 17th holes to capture the victory.

With the win, Burns advances to the round of 32 and faces Southern Cal star Justin Suh on Thursday.
