Shreveport’s Sam Burns shot an opening round 74 - 4-over par, in his first major championship round ever Friday at the US Open golf championship.

The LSU sophomore-to-be is currently tied for 65th. Burns first day score put him ahead of some of the games biggest names, including world No. 1 Jason Day (76), Rory McIlroy (77) and Rickie Fowler (76).

Burns, a Calvary Baptist grad, shot the second lowest round of the amateurs in the field. He had one birdie, three bogies and a double bogey over his first 18 holes at the legendary Pittsburgh course.
