The old idea of a night out may be changing for young adults in Shreveport, Bossier City, and across Louisiana. Instead of every social plan revolving around drinks, more people in their 20s and early 30s are finding connection through fitness classes, walking groups, pickleball, running clubs, coffee meetups, and other active hobbies.

A New Kind of Shreveport Social Scene

In a recent interview in the Wall Street Journal, reporter Oyin Adedoyin  described the shift this way: “less young people, 20s and early 30s, are socializing around drinking.” She also pointed out that many young adults are spending more money on fitness and active hobbies.

That tracks with what many families and businesses are already seeing. A night out does not have to mean sitting at a bar. It might mean meeting friends for a workout, walking the riverfront, playing pickleball, or grabbing coffee after a class.

Why Gen Z Is Drinking Less

Part of the change appears to be health related. Young adults have grown up with phones, watches, apps, and fitness trackers constantly measuring steps, sleep, calories, heart rate, and workouts. That kind of technology keeps health in front of people all day.

Cost matters, too. Going out is expensive. A couple of drinks, food, tips, gas, and entertainment can turn one casual night into a budget problem. For young adults trying to save money, an active hobby can feel like a better investment than a bar tab.

Gallup also reported in 2025 that the share of young adults who say they drink has continued to fall, showing this is bigger than just one city or one friend group.

What This Means for Shreveport Businesses

This could open the door for local businesses that create places for young adults to gather without alcohol being the center of the room. Gyms, coffee shops, recreation centers, parks, churches, restaurants with mocktail menus, and activity-based venues may all benefit from the shift.

It does not mean bars are disappearing. It means the competition for young adults’ time and money is changing.

For Shreveport, this is a chance to think differently about community. Young adults still want connection. They still want something to do. They may just want it in a setting that leaves them feeling better the next morning.
