In what has become a rather politicized issue between the mayor and the city council.  Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux sent a letter to the council addressing the concern of the conditions of the existing Shreveport Police Department headquarters.

The current headquarters, located at 1234 Texas Street in downtown Shreveport is in extemely poor, and some say, very dangerous condition. See more about the current state of the headquarters HERE

Last month, members of the Shreveport City Council asked Mayor Arceneaux to declare a state of emergency concerning the police department headquarters.  But the mayor told KEEL News, that declaring a state of emergency brought no benefits, in regards to state funding or any other, and declined to do so.

The city council responded by saying they would not move forward on any of the bond proposals until something is done about the police headquarters.  Councilwoman Ursula Bowman told the mayor in a statement, "We hold the purse-strings."

In his letter sent to the council, the mayor announced several possible locations for a temporary police headquarters.  Those locations include:

1. Building 6- 3004 Knight Street

2. Lakeshore Elementary- 1807 San Jacinto Avenue

3. E.B. Williams Stoner Hill Elementary- 2127 C.E. Galloway Blvd

4. Sunset Acres Elementary- 6414 W. Canal Blvd

5. Werner Park Elementary- 271 Corbit St

6. Northwest Louisiana Technical College- 2010 North Market St

7. South Pointe Properties- 1120 Southpointe Parkway

8. Shreve City Office Park- 2920 Knight St

9. Stage Department Store- 3000 North Market St

10. Aaron's Rentals Bldg- 1919 North Market St.

11. CVS bldg- 9194 Mansfield Rd.

12. WK Hamilton Terrace School- 1105 Louisiana Ave.

13. WK-  2219 Line Ave.

14. 8509 Line Ave.

15. Montgomery Ward- 8932 Jewella

16.  Intertech- 2031 Kings Hwy

17. Unitarian Church- 8932 Jewella

18. WK- 4700 Hilry Huckaby Road

The mayor presented a timeline of the 4 phases of work involved in getting everything finished

1. Relocating the occupants of the existing SPD Headquarters

2. Securing the addition funding needed for the construction of the new HQ building.

3. Constructing all three of the substations included in the 2021 bond issue

4. Constructing the new building.

The mayor hopes to have everyone out of the existing building in early 2025, with the first two substations completed and ready for occupancy by the end of 2025.  The mayor also said if current projections hold, the construction plans for the new building will be completed around June 30th, 2025.  The project is expected to have a 2 year construction time, with the new headquarters hopefully to be ready by the fall of 2027.
