Are you planning to attend one of the Mardi Gras parades in Shreveport this year? These huge events attract hundreds of thousand of visitors and locals for so many gatherings. Before we know it, parade weekends will be here.

Shreveport has become one of the go-to spots for guests from out of state and even folks from other countries who want to enjoy Mardi Gras but they are shying away from going to New Orleans. These numbers are expected to continue to grow.

What's the Plan for Security at the Mardi Gras Parades

Shreveport police leaders have been putting a plan together to address security along the parade routes. Chief Wayne Smith tells KEEL News he is expecting to get help from the Caddo Sheriff's Office, Louisiana State Police and others to help along the route for the big parades. Chief Smith says he wants to make sure this is a safe and family-friendly celebration.

How Will Technology Be Used for Security at Mardi Gras

Chief Smith says his officers will rely on even more technology this year. He says there are more cameras along the route. He will be bringing in the mobile cameras and officers will also use drones to keep a close eye on the crowds. The Chief also says the police mobile tower called Sky Watch will be set up in Shreve City to monitor the large crowds in that area.

What's the Chief's Biggest Concern about Security

Chief Smith says one of his biggest worries is the number of people who consumer too much alcohol. He says another top concern for officers is alcohol-related behavior during Mardi Gras festivities. Chief Smith says public intoxication and underage drinking are issues police prepare for every year.

The Chief is urging the public to celebrate responsibly, look out for one another, and report suspicious activity if you see it.
