Grocery Chain to Sell Two Louisiana Stores, Including Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, LA – Bad news for the Broadmoor and Captain Shreve Neighborhood in Shreveport. Kroger has announced plans to sell off dozens of stores around the country and two Louisiana stores are on the list.

Kroger recently purchased Albertson’s and the two grocery giants have been working to make this mega merger work. The company is planning to divest many stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers which operates Piggly Wiggly stores across the nation.

How Many Stores Are Being Sold Off?

A new list released by Kroger shows the company is going to sell off nearly 600 stores in 18 states. Kroger will also sell six distribution centers and one processing plant to C&S.

This list of store changes comes just six weeks before a critical court hearing on the proposed grocery merger between Kroger and Albertsons.

What States Will Lose the Most Stores?

Kroger and Albertsons would divest 124 stories in Washington, 101 in Arizona, 91 in Colorado, 63 in California, 62 in Oregon, 35 in Illinois and 28 in Texas. But several other states will be losing stores in this process.

What Stores Would Be Sold in Louisiana?

This list includes a store in Lake Charles and the Albertson’s store on Southfield in Shreveport. We don’t know yet if the Shreveport store would be converted into a Piggly Wiggly. Ironically, the Southfield Store has just completed a renovation with the addition of a Starbucks.

We do get some good news in this report. A statement has been sent out to the media saying:

C&S committed to ensuring zero stores will close as a result of the merger, all frontline associates will remain employed, all existing collective bargaining agreements will continue, and associates will continue to receive industry-leading benefits alongside bargained-for wages.

The statement continues:

C&S's strong operational focus coupled with its experienced management team and financial resources will position it to successfully operate divested stores for years to come. Importantly, we are committed to working closely with C&S to ensure a seamless transition of ownership for all divested stores and supporting operational infrastructure.

KEEL News asked the Kroger PR team if we know yet if the local store will operate as a Piggly Wiggly. We got this response:

"It’s too early to determine which banner the store will be, just that C&S will operate it."

But union officials say this is “not a done deal, far from it. We remain focused on stopping the proposed mega-merger for the same reasons we have stated since it was first announced over 20 months ago — because we know it would harm workers, it would harm shoppers, it would harm suppliers and communities, and it is illegal.”

This big merger case is now headed for a showdown in court.
