Shreveport Schools Shift Fundraising Focus to Online Platforms This Year
You are probably seeing solicitations for school fundraisers as we move into September. It's that time of year. Schools are raising money for a variety of projects. But things have changed dramatically on how students ask for money.
In Louisiana, you will find all kinds of fundraisers depending on the school and the amount of money schools are trying to bring in.
What Are the Best Fund Raising Campaigns
The most profitable campaigns are things like discount cards, cookie dough, popcorn and chocolate. But the tide is turning. Schools are moving to efforts that do not involve products for sale. Many schools are using online portals to collect money for special needs and projects.
Popcorn and Cookie Dough Still Popular
Cookie dough and popcorn fundraisers are still very popular and are very successful. Gourmet popcorn, in particular, has become a favorite because it’s affordable and appeals to both kids and parents. Cookie dough tubs remain a staple for schools looking for easy-to-sell items that bring in big profits.
Carnivals and Fun Runs Draw Big Crowds
You might be invited to an event that's hosted by a local school as a fund raising event. Fall fairs and fun runs are go-to projects. You might also see walk-a-thons on this list. These events bring in donations while also giving families a chance to get together and have some fun.
Local Discounts Add Extra Value
I'm not a big fan of these items, but the discount card fundraiser is very popular these days. Local businesses agree to offer special deals that are included on a card that can be used at some of your favorite spots. I always forget I bought these cards and I rarely use them after I've bought one.
We asked Caddo School Superintendent Keith Burton about the changes in school fundraising ideas. We asked if schools can still take cash in fundraising campaigns. He told KEEL News:
Only as a last resort. Try to sell tickets and other purchases through an online system. But if someone shows up at an event like a football game or dance and only has cash, then we do accept cash.
School Gear Brings in Cash
Many schools also bring in extra money by selling spirit wear—t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other merchandise featuring school logos. Families often see these purchases as an investment in the school activities and school spirit for the students.
What Are the Least Popular School Fundraisers?
The ones that involve lots of labor are a bit of a hassle. This would include big carnivals that require dozens of volunteers. We are also tired of buying overpriced items. The days of wrapping paper at double the cost has not been successful lately.
Some folks also don't like the calendar fundraisers. In this plan, you pick a day of the month and pay that dollar amount. Some say this just feels like begging and has no benefit for the donors.
One KEEL listener says:
I have the same problem with the current model of fundraising. In my day, we sold chocolate, did CARWASHES, mowed lawns, or sold cheesecakes. Now, they are just begging. Plain and simple, it’s begging. Work for your money. School panhandling is bogus
What's One of the Most Successful School Fundraisers in the Area?
Southfield School hosts a casino night. Families and faculty gather get together in the school gym for a night of gambling, blackjack, roulette and poker. Folks even dress in costumes. Local restaurants bring in some of the best food in the area. This annual fundraiser typically brings in about $100,000 for the school.
