New Orleans Saints Unveil New (Old) Jerseys
The New Orleans Saints are putting in work this offseason. Rebuilding their coaching staff, rebuilding their quarterback room, and apparently rebuilding their jersey combos.
Earlier this offseason, the Saints added a helmet to their rotation, which instantly became one of the best in the league. Their new white alternate helmet looks incredible, and paired with their white "color rush" jersey, it gives the teams one of the best kits in the NFL.
But they took it a step further this week, and for some, it was a step too far.
What Do The Saints New Uniforms Look Like?
This week, the New Orleans Saints took Louisiana by surprise and launched a new alternative jersey. This new "gold" jersey feels like a bold choice, which got some very excited about it, and it has rubbed some fans the wrong way...
While they are calling it "gold", these jerseys appear to be very tan. Flat, matte, tan. In contrast to the gold on their helmets, which has a shimmer/shine to it that you would expect from a "gold" color.
But could they do a "gold" jersey that looks more like gold?
The New Saints Jerseys Look Like Old Jerseys
There was actually a time in Saints history where they rolled out gold jerseys that looked like gold jerseys. So yeah, these jerseys are actually a throwback jersey reveal.
In 2002, the New Orleans Saints had a gold alternative jersey that featured a darked tint to the gold than what they dropped this week. But more importantly, those 2002 jerseys were a more "shiny" fabric...which gave them a natural sheen.
So there is a way to make the jersey feel more golden, but what the Saints put out this week feels more...khaki. Not just khaki, it feels a little "low budget' for an NFL team. Many have pointed out that the new gold attempt looks closer to a mid-major college football jersey than an NFL jersey.
Back in 2002, there were a lot of NFL jerseys that were made of a fabric that felt shinier anyway. So it wasn't that the Saints changed the fabric to make those old gold jerseys, it just worked better with what the rest of the league was doing. On the other side of the coin, the modern material on NFL jerseys is a more matte finish fabric. So they don't have a natural sheen for all teams, like in 2002.
Would it be possible for the Saints to completely change the material of their jerseys to make the alternative golds shiner? Probably not. So this is probably the best they can do with what they have to work with.
Who Asked For These Saints Gold Jerseys?
Someone actually did ask for this new jersey style. Saints legend Cam Jordan has been asking for the gold alternative return for a few years. Back in 2020, Jordan posted a pic of a 2002 Joe Horn jersey on social media with a request.
Even in the low quality picture Jordan posted on his social media, you can see the golden sheen on that Joe Horn jersey. So maybe Jordan was hoping for something closer to the 2002 version, instead of the 2025 version.
