A leadership transition is underway at the Bossier City Fire Department. Mayor Tommy Chandler announced that longtime firefighter Blair Bockhaus has been selected as the city’s next fire chief. He will take over the role following the retirement of current Fire Chief Brad Zagone early next year.

Mayor Chandler shared with KEEL News on Tuesday his decision for Bossier City’s new Fire Chief, and explained what led to Bockhaus being chosen for one of the city’s most critical public safety roles.

A Familiar Face in the Bossier Fire Department

Bockhaus is a well-known name within the Bossier City Fire Department, with more than two decades of service. He has spent roughly 21 to 22 years working his way through the department, gaining experience across multiple areas, including emergency medical services.

Mayor Chandler said that experience was a major factor in the decision, noting that Bockhaus understands both the operational and leadership sides of running a modern fire department.

A Thorough Selection Process by the Bossier Mayor

The mayor described the search as extensive and competitive. Between 14 and 18 candidates initially tested for the position. That group was gradually narrowed through interviews and evaluations, eventually coming down to a final group of two.

Chandler said the strength of the applicant pool made the decision difficult, but Bockhaus consistently stood out as the best overall fit to lead the department forward.

Support From Within the Bossier City FD Ranks

One of the strongest indicators that the right choice was made came from inside the department itself. Chandler said firefighters have voiced strong support for Bockhaus, a sign that morale and continuity are expected to remain steady during the transition.

That internal backing is viewed as an important piece in maintaining effective operations and teamwork.

Transition Timeline

Chief Brad Zagone’s final day with the department is scheduled for January 2. Bockhaus is already working in a transition and training capacity and is expected to formally step into the role shortly after. As with other department head appointments, he will serve a probationary period during his first year as chief.

Mayor Chandler praised Chief Zagone’s 31 years of service, thanking him for his commitment to the city and his leadership during Chandler’s time in office.
