Despite the fact that the U.S. is still hit hard by coronavirus, new unemployment claims decreased week-over-week on September 21, and were 88% below the peak during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help add some context to these statistics, WalletHub just released updated rankings for the States Whose Weekly Unemployment Claims are Recovering the Quickest.

To identify which states’ workforces are experiencing the quickest recovery from COVID-19, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three metrics based on changes in unemployment claims. According to the WalletHub numbers, South Dakota has made the biggest gains in the previous week. At the other end of the list comes Kansas, with our home state of Louisiana ranking next to last at fiftieth.

Going back to the beginning of the Coronavirus shutdowns in March, Oregon has made the biggest economic comeback, Georgia's at the bottom of the pile at 51 and Louisiana, still under a  number of statewide restrictions, is at 47.

There are currently 13.6 million Americans unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in total. Last week, there were 837,000 new unemployment claims nationwide, which is a lot fewer than the 6.9 million during the peak of the pandemic (an 88% reduction).
