Louisiana AG Offers Halloween Safety Tips

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry is hoping that everyone has a fun but safe Halloween.

Even with changes or cancelations with some towns for Halloween trick-or-treating, other places will be allowing the festivities so we must all be cautious for the celebrations.

Here are some safety tips being recommended by the AG's office:

• Have a reflective costume or attach reflective items/tape to you and your children's costumes to make it easy to be seen by the driving public.
• Whether you have reflective items or not, it's always good to bring along a flashlight for your excursion.
• Many families decide to drive around to different neighborhoods for trick-or-treating so make sure that you, as the driver, are only paying attention to your driving. Don't let anything distract you from your purpose as the designated driver.
• Parents/guardians are recommended to walk with their children while trick-or-treating, so please be aware of your surroundings. Don't become distracted or play with your phones.
• It's a best practice not to let your kids trick-or-treat alone. Always make sure that they are with someone or with a small group for their safety.
• Follow the rules. Attorney General Landry says you need to obey all local laws/ordinances in your area that pertain to Halloween.
• As part of following the rules, it's a good idea to remind your kids that they must understand and obey all traffic signs and signals. Where they are available, you need to use the crosswalks, and it's best to cross the street at corners.
• You want to make sure that any costumes/wig/accessories that you or your children are wearing on Halloween night are flame resistant.
• Another tip to help our children have a great and safe time is to make sure their costumes fit well. Whether it's their costumes, shoes or accessories, please make sure that they fit appropriately. Ill-fitting costume items can lead to falls, trips and blocked vision.

It is imperative that families be extra vigilant and take the appropriate precautions to make certain Louisiana's children remain out of harm's way. I encourage parents and guardians to review the safety tips and re-iterate them to their children.
