Louisiana's attorney general says it is not necessary for court officials to immediately begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples even though the U.S. Supreme Court upheld gay marriage nationwide Friday.

Gays and lesbians have been arriving in Louisiana courts seeking marriage licenses.

In a statement, Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says he saw nothing in the court's ruling making the order effective immediately.

Caldwell joined other Louisiana politicians in condemning the ruling as, in his own words, "an intrusion into what should be a state issue."

The Louisiana Clerks Association is advising clerks of court to wait for a 25-day period for the high court to consider a rehearing to elapse before issuing licenses.
