Krewe Of Highland in Shreveport Begs Riders Not to Throw Mardi Gras Beads
SHREVEPORT, LA - A Shreveport Mardi Gras Krewe is urging riders not to throw Mardi Gras beads. In fact, the founder of the Krewe Of Highland, Matthew Linn is "begging riders not to throw Mardi Gras beads during the parade this spring.
Why Krewe of Highland Wants to Get Rid of Mardi Gras Beads
Linn says the problem is not with the high quality, specialty beads. He says the problem is with the small "trash beads that no one wants." Linn says the small strands of beads end up in our landfill or down our sewer drains. Linn tells KEEL News the organizers are urging Krewe members to throw items that are recyclable. He says people no longer want the trash beads this is a horrible waster.
Krewe of Highland Is Not Banning Mardi Gras Beads
KEEL News asked Linn how many riders will still be throwing these cheap beads and he told us they still have about 25% of the Krewes still throwing beads the people don't want. He's hoping this will change during this year's parade which is the 30th anniversary of the Highland Parade.
Highland is known for unique throws including hot dogs and ramen noodles. The Krewe of Highland rolls at 2pm on Sunday, March 2nd in the Highland neighborhood. The Krewe has been having events requesting donations of stuffed animals as a way to supplement the throws Krewes will be passing out to the crowds.
