What Is a Bourbon Drop? Everything You Need to Know at Cuban Liquor

A line of eager shoppers weaving through the store, whispered rumors of hidden gems, and people walking out with bottles held like trophies, if you’ve been inside Cuban Liquor during a "Bourbon Drop," you’ve seen the magic firsthand.

It all started when I popped into Cuban Liquor for a bottle of wine (because let’s be real, their selection is incredible and the prices can’t be beat). But as soon as I walked in, I noticed person after person marching straight to the counter, pointing to a specific bottle behind the glass, and walking out as if they had just won the lottery.

I even watched one woman who was on an absolute mission for her husband. He couldn’t break away from work, so he sent her in as his secret agent to secure the prize.

Curious, I asked my friend and Cuban Liquor co-owner, Grant Nuckolls, what was going on. He filled me in on the local phenomenon known as the Bourbon Drop.

"About once a month, we put out 50+ bottles of allocated, limited, rare whiskeys on the shelf," Grant explained. "These are highly sought-after brands that we only get a few bottles of. We limit them to one per customer, so if 50 bottles are put out, 50 different customers can leave with a great bottle. We don’t mark them up above MSRP, and we do these drops randomly with no advance notice to anyone."

Think of it as a collector’s dream day right here in Shreveport. We have amazing local run clubs, book clubs, and needlepoint groups, but this informal bourbon club is in a league of its own. There is something so fun about watching people geek out over rare finds, and even better, seeing a locally owned business keep a tradition like this alive. You just can’t replicate that kind of energy in a big-box store.
